Last October, my partner and I (both happily ace) watched The Haunting of Hill House on Netflix. My partner rarely jumps at anything. I, on the other hand, jump at nearly everything while demanding to be cuddled at all angles. (I like being scared and cuddled, okay?) Ghost screaming in the car? Zombie monster in the basement? I nearly took her chin off.
But nothing made me jump as much as the very abrupt sex scene, and she has never let me hear the end of it. 💀
Case in point: asexuals are no strangers to horror.
But here is a book list of YA horror featuring asexual characters and horrors of the paranormal, fantastical, and monster variety.

THE SPIDER AND HER DEMONS
Genre: Horror, Fantasy
Asexual Character: Zhi (main character)
Author: Sydney Khoo
Is the author asexual? Yes
Synopsis:
Between surviving high school and working at her aunt’s dumpling shop, all Zhi wants is to find time for her friends...and make sure no one finds out she’s half spider-demon.
But when she accidentally kills and eats a man in front of the most popular girl in school, she discovers she might not be the scariest thing in the shadows.

DON'T LET THE FOREST IN
Genre: Horror, Dark Academia
Asexual Character: Andrew (main character)
Author: C.G. Drews
Is the author asexual? Yes
Synopsis:
High school senior Andrew Perrault finds refuge in the twisted fairytales that he writes for the only person who can ground him to reality―Thomas Rye, the boy with perpetually ink-stained hands and hair like autumn leaves. And with his twin sister, Dove, inexplicably keeping him at a cold distance upon their return to Wickwood Academy, Andrew finds himself leaning on his friend even more.
But something strange is going on with Thomas. His abusive parents have mysteriously vanished, and he arrives at school with blood on his sleeve. Thomas won't say a word about it, and shuts down whenever Andrew tries to ask him questions. Stranger still, Thomas is haunted by something, and he seems to have lost interest in his artwork―whimsically macabre sketches of the monsters from Andrew's wicked stories.
Desperate to figure out what's wrong with his friend, Andrew follows Thomas into the off-limits forest one night and catches him fighting a nightmarish monster―Thomas's drawings have come to life and are killing anyone close to him. To make sure no one else dies, the boys battle the monsters every night. But as their obsession with each other grows stronger, so do the monsters, and Andrew begins to fear that the only way to stop the creatures might be to destroy their creator...

NOT EVEN BONES
Genre: Horror, Dark Fantasy
Asexual Characters: Nita (main character), Kovit (main character)
Author: Rebecca Shaeffer
Is the author asexual? Couldn't confirm
Synopsis:
A dark fantasy about a girl who sells magical body parts on the black market — until she’s betrayed.
Nita doesn’t murder supernatural beings and sell their body parts on the internet—her mother does that. Nita just dissects the bodies after they’ve been “acquired.” But when her mom brings home a live specimen, Nita decides she wants out — dissecting
living people is a step too far.
But when she tries to save her mother’s victim, she ends up sold on the black market in his place — because Nita herself is a supernatural being. Now Nita is on the other side of the bars, and there is no line she won’t cross to escape and make sure no one can ever capture her again.
Nita did a good deed, and it cost her everything. Now she’s going to do a lot of bad deeds to get it all back.

ELATSOE
Genre: Paranormal, Fantasy, Murder Mystery
Asexual Characters: Ellie
Author: Darcie Little Badger
Is the author asexual? Yes
Synopsis:
Imagine an America very similar to our own. It's got homework, best friends, and pistachio ice cream.
There are some differences. This America has been shaped dramatically by the magic, monsters, knowledge, and legends of its peoples, those Indigenous and those not. Some of these forces are charmingly everyday, like the ability to make an orb of
light appear or travel across the world through rings of fungi. But other forces are less charming and should never see the light of day.
Elatsoe lives in this slightly stranger America. She can raise the ghosts of dead animals, a skill passed down through generations of her Lipan Apache family. Her beloved cousin has just been murdered in a town that wants no prying eyes. But she is going to do more than pry. The picture-perfect facade of Willowbee masks gruesome secrets, and she will rely on her wits, skills, and friends to tear off the mask and protect her family.

FUNERAL GIRL
Genre: Horror, Fantasy
Asexual Characters: Georgia (main character)
Author: Emma K. Ohland
Is the author asexual? Couldn't confirm
Synopsis:
Sixteen-year-old Georgia Richter feels conflicted about the funeral home her parents run—especially because she has the ability to summon ghosts. With one touch of any body that passes through Richter Funeral Home, she can awaken the spirit of the departed. With one more touch, she makes the spirit disappear, to a fate that remains mysterious to Georgia. To cope with her deep anxiety about death, she does her best to fulfill the final wishes of the deceased whose ghosts she briefly revives.
Then her classmate Milo's body arrives at Richter--and his spirit wants help with unfinished business, forcing Georgia to reckon with her relationship to grief and mortality.

SAWKILL GIRLS
Genre: Horror, Mystery
Asexual Characters: Zoey (main character)
Author: Claire Legend
Is the author asexual? No
Synopsis:
Who are the Sawkill Girls?
Marion: the new girl. Awkward and plain, steady and dependable. Weighed down by tragedy and hungry for love she’s sure she’ll never find.
Zoey: the pariah. Luckless and lonely, hurting but hiding it. Aching with grief and dreaming of vanished girls. Maybe she’s broken—or maybe everyone else is.
Val: the queen bee. Gorgeous and privileged, ruthless and regal. Words like silk and eyes like knives, a heart made of secrets and a mouth full of lies.
Their stories come together on the island of Sawkill Rock, where gleaming horses graze in rolling pastures and cold waves crash against black cliffs. Where kids whisper the legend of an insidious monster at parties and around campfires.
Where girls have been disappearing for decades, stolen away by a ravenous evil no one has dared to fight…until now.

THE GRIMROSE GIRLS
Genre: Horror, Dark Academia
Asexual Characters: Yuki (main character)
Author: Laura Pohl
Is the author asexual? No
Synopsis:
Four friends, one murder, and a dark fate that may leave them all doomed ...
After the mysterious death of their best friend, Ella, Yuki, and Rory are the talk of their elite school, Grimrose Académie. The police ruled Ariane's death as a suicide, but the trio is determined to find out what really happened.
When Nani Eszes arrives as their newest roommate, it sets into motion a series of events that no one could have predicted. As the girls retrace their friend's final days, they discover a dark secret about Grimrose—Ariane wasn't the first dead girl.
They soon learn that all the past murders are connected to ancient fairy-tale curses...and that their own fates are tied to the stories, dooming the girls to brutal and gruesome endings unless they can break the cycle for good.
